Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Vivekananda College for Commerce and Science was instituted on the 2nd of August 1993.
The Department of Mathematics started at the time of inception of the college, with one lecturer and three undergraduate courses (Maths-Physics-Chemistry, Maths-Physics-Electronics and Maths-Physics-Computer Science). Statistics was introduced in 1994 with one lecturer and one undergraduate course (Maths-Statistics-Computer Science).
After 18 glorious years and the 19th year on, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, which started with an intake of 60 students, has expanded to an annual intake of 300 students. As on date, the Department has strength of about 700 students, an increase of 11 times plus, the initial intake.
As on date, the streams being followed are:
Mathematics-Electronics-Computer Science (M.E.Cs).
Mathematics-Statistics-Computer Science (M.S.Cs).
Mathematics-Physics-Computer Science (M.P.Cs).
The Department teaching staff has grown from one faculty in 1993 to nine experienced and highly qualified members.
It started in the year 1993 with Ms.Nirmala Sharma as the first HOD, followed by Mr.Koundinya, then by Ms.Madhavi and currently headed by Dr.K.Vasudeva Rao since 1997.
This started in the year 1994 headed by Mr.Srinivas. He was followed by Ms.Seena Biju and Mrs.Lalitha Narayanan, presently V Selva Kumar is heading the same.
Dr.K.Vasudeva Rao is the HOD of both Mathematics & Statistics.
Lecturers of our department teach not only the physical science groups, but also with allied faculties of other departments like:
1. B. C. A – Discrete Mathematics, Data Analysis
2. M.Sc (Microbiology) – Biometry
3. M.Sc (Computer Science) – Discrete Mathematics
4. M.Sc Bio Chemistry – Computational Techniques
Department organizes Workshops,Seminars, Guest Lectures, Industrial Visits for students every year
