Activities for Academic Year 2012-13

 

9th June, 2012:

The Department along with all the Departments of Life Sciences had organized a workshop on “Careers in Biological Sciences”. The objective of the workshop was to create awareness among the biology students (Intermediate and 10+2) of the twin cities on the career options in Biology.

Eminent persons from industries - Dr Radha Rangrajan, CEO, Vitas Pharma and Dr Annie Hassan, Genetic Counselor, Kamineni Hospital were invited to address the students and to enlist the companies involved in research in Life Sciences. read more..

5th July, 2012:

A guest lecture on “Genetic Counseling” was conducted by the Department of Botany, Genetics &Biotechnology. The speaker was Dr. Annie Hasan, Senior Consultant and H O D Department of Genetics from Kamineni Hospitals.

Dr.Annie Hasan elaborated on the need for Genetic Counseling and the details of the process followed in her lab. She elucidated the cases dealt by her team. The type of counseling offered depends on the cultural and social environment of the country.

The students put forth several queries regarding the course offered at Kamineni Hospitals. While clarifying the queries, Dr Annie Hasan stressed on the need for good genetic counsellers to help the physicians for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

6th October,2012:

The Department of Botany, Genetics &Biotechnology conducted a guest lecture on “Vaccines Past, Present & Future” by Prof. Gita Sharma, R&DTapadia Diagnostics Pvt Ltd. Hyderabad. She is one of the pioneers in developing the Hepatitis B vaccine.

The guest lecture was organized to create awareness among students on the concept of Vaccines and the different vaccines available for different diseases, the different ways vaccines are administered and the advantages and disadvantages of vaccines. Prof. Gita Sharma gave an insight into the future prospects for developing new vaccines. She also briefed about edible vaccines and recombinant vaccines. read more..

greENERGY Club Activities:

June, 2012:

In the month of June the members of the greEnergy club were actively involved in organic farming, vermi-composting and naming of about 120 plants in the campus that included the Botanical names and family of each plant.

18th & 21st  August, 2012:

A tie up with ITC Limited as part of their WOW project saw the greEnergy club of the Department collect about 2,200 kg of waste paper from the college campus for recycling purpose.

8th September, 2012:

The greEnergy club of the Department of Botany, Genetics and Biotechnology, Bhavan’s Vivekananda College, Sainikpuri organized the sale of Green Ganesh in the campus. 150 clay Geneshas were sold on the eve of Ganesh Chathurthi. Students, staff including people from the neighborhood purchased the clay Ganeshas which were given away in eco friendly paper bags.

10th & 11th October, 2012:

GreEnergy club, NCC unit and NSS unit jointly organized Tree Plantation Program in the college premises. A total of 45 saplings were planted in the college parking area. These saplings were donated by Mr Krishnam Raju of NGO Vishnoi Amurthangamayee organization.

11th January,2013:

As part of Bhavanotsav 2013, the greENERGY club organized three competitive events –

Micropresentation on “e-waste”, Model making “Wealth from Waste” and DNA puzzle

Sixty students participated in these events.  Apart from our own students, students from St Joseph’s Degree & PG College and Siva Sivani Degree College also competed in these events. Mrs K Vijayalakshmi Rao, Entrepreneur was the judge for the events.

The students of Life Sciences also put up a Model of the DNA double helix.
